My Statement

I, Kendal McMaster, am a student, an artist and a young woman who is trying to navigate life. In the briefest of terms, I make art about the world that surrounds me. Art that shows the beauty of my subject matter and that captures the timeless moments of the world in a way that no camera can do. I do this because the process is something that makes me happy and gives me peace. In my artwork I show the beauty of a single moment of stillness and an appreciation of the environment that surrounds me. I aim to illustrate the incorporeality of a scene.

I start instinctually. My process is fluid. Rather than a strict plan from start to finish, I will often have multiple pieces going at the same time. If I am stuck on one, I start another. I wait until I have an inspiration for what to do next before I continue working on the previous. This way my work is never forced or stiff. I believe in freely creating my art without letting factors such as outside stress or situations interrupt the stillness that working on my art brings me. The element of peace that settles over my mind as soon as I get into the zone is not something that I will never compromise.

Just as how working on my drawings is able to bring me peace, I am also influenced by subjects that invoke the same soothing emotions. My goal is to use my skills in order to create pieces that fill others with the same virtue that I felt while making it. Often, elements of nature, unique architecture, and scenery are some of my most prominent subjects because I feel like they are something that everyone can connect to. In the same way I connect to them in a sense of awe. I use my emotions, surrounding scenery and landscapes to turn my thoughts, my hopes and desires, into visual art as a way of processing and communicating what I feel. The most important thing about my art is how free it is.

My process is to explore what it means to be instinctual and create without thinking. I have trust in my artistic style and the technical skills that I have developed over the years of doing art; therefore I can step back intellectually and simply observe and listen to what my emotions are telling me.

When people see my art, I want them to admire my work for its peaceful scenery and unique style. I want them to see its precise execution and recognize my strong technical skill. When people see my art, I want them to be moved. I want them to be able to connect with it on a level that is not just intellectual. At its most basic foundations, my work explores finding peace and stillness. How can I as the artist create a sense of serenity in the viewer. My art is special because it is designed to be more than art. It is the tool in which I can pass on my own feelings of peace to someone else.I believe that my art is the vessel that I use to process my thoughts and ideals. It is what brings me stillness and I believe that I am able to share that feeling of peace with my viewers through the finished work.
